So Close, So Far
The last couple days were a bit of stress, a bit of fun -- a lot of exhaustion. So on Saturday, I hung out with CalSO folks and we went bowling and then got some dinner. It was a ton of fun. I hadn't been bowling in so long -- and it really showed. Couldn't break a hundred on either game. Wow! That sucked. We ate at Pasta Pomodero again, which I guess has become some kind of thing now. Second time around was better than the first. There was talk about wearing black robes and (guys) bleaching our hair for the summer. CalSO is not a cult.
Sunday was rough, trying to learn pchem for the midterm Monday, do the damn ee lab, and also work on my English paper, which was due on Tuesday. Paper didn't happen, ee barely got done, and pchem was jacked up. I don't really know how that midterm went on Monday, but whatever. All of Monday was consumed by the paper. A funny thing happened -- I printed out the copy at around 1am on Monday night, and the last couple pages were faded, but still legible. Apparently the ink in my printer ran out JUST as the paper printed. I thought to myself, "now that was really lucky!" I went to bed, and around 6:30am Tuesday, when my alarm went off, I suddenly remembered the teacher wanted TWO copies of the paper! Shit! That is a HUGE bust! I have class 8-9:30 and the paper was due AT 9:30. Not to mention, no library is open till 8. So I did all that there was to do. After ochem lecture, I ran to Moffitt, made a copy of the 10 page paper, AND rushed to Hearst Mining, making it exactly at 9:40! Beat that all you people who think you're fast!
Today, in CalSO class, we had a pretty interesting guest speaker who talked about the effects language can have upon different people. I really found the entire lecture to be very enlightening as well as informative, as I started to realize that some of the language I take for granted might mean something completely different to other people. I also learned some new stuff, including the fact that the expression "rule of thumb" referred to a width of the switch that a man was allowed to beat a woman with (it couldn't be larger than your thumb). It's really interesting to learn about some of the background of these day to day phrases. Apparently this was just the beginning of the training on language and we are supposed to do some more intensive training during summer before the programs. I'm really looking forward to learning more and am pretty intrigued by this particular subject, because I realize that I have never really thought about it before now.
I tried out Crossroads today for the first time, heading over with CalSO folks after class! Thanks to Garett for swiping me in. All I gotta say is, I'm impressed. It's WAY WAY WAY better than U1 last year. Even the CKC DC of last year can't really compare. I also had forgotten how easy it is to waste time when at the DC. After living the apt life for a year, I have grown accustomed to eating dinner walking from point A to point B. We wasted nearly two hours there. The rain ruined my plan to go to the library. As I left, it was raining, and I just headed home, because I didn't want to deal with it. I hate rain! The summer needs to be here -- I'm over this weather! Big time!
So I'm going to bring this rather mundane entry to a close now. Sorry if I bored you all, but I just wanted to write down what was going on with me, and also to take a breather from school as well as life. I'm really excited about summer now, not only because of CalSO, but also because I'm getting really tired of school right now. In addition to having time off from school, I think summer will also be a good transition from all this irritating lower div coursework to more interesting stuff. It seems so close, but my last final is still 4 weeks from today. Sucks!
